About the town of Kirup
Kirup, or Upper Capel as it was formerly known, was first settled as farming land in the 1870s. In 1897 gold was discovered at Donnybrook and a railway was completed between Donnybrook and Bridgetown. With easier access to Kirup, the timbers sawmill was established. Today Kirup’s major industries are organic horticulture, apple, pear and cherry orcharding, fruit packing and cattle breeding. It is famed for Kirup Syrup, a red wine originally made by Alberto Vinci at his local vineyard, which is still available from the tavern today.
